RD reflection [May issue] : Jump or die

After reading this article,i feel that Tom was really lucky to escape death.Tom was on a trip with a companion and as he was determined to make the most of the trip,he headed up the mountains alone. While he was snowboarding,he could not resist the temptation of going off-piste as it was more fun and the conditions were great. Thus,he ignored all the warning signs and a rope that was blocking his way, unaware of the danger he was putting himself in.

However, when his surroundings became unfamiliar, his confidence faltered and he tried to look for signs of other people around or anything that looked familiar to him. But,he could not see anyone near and he began to slow down.He realised that he was lost. Before he could have the time to think,a black crack formed rapidly from both ends of his snowboard.Everything under him collapsed and as he rolled and tumbled,he knew that he was in an avalanche. When it came to a stop,he looked back and he felt that it was impossible to return. He tried to use his mobile phone but there was no signal. He pondered about what to do for a while. He decided that he could not wait, because nobody knew where he was. Then,he saw a road at the bottom of a valley and he decided that it was where his destination was.The cliff of the ice, snow and rock below him seemed vertical and he knew that it would be his most extreme snowboard ride he have ever experienced. After taking a deep breath,he encouraged himself that he could do it.

Following on,he went down in a series of heart-lurching leaps and it felt exciting. However, the slope became steeper and his snowboard bagn to bang into rocks. He took the impact on bent knees and ended up battered and bruised. In 15 minutes time,he had managed to descend 1300 feet. This was when he was faced with a decision to make.Although he knew that it would be an enormous risk to take,he had to take it. Before he did anything else,he tapped a farewell message into his phone, knowing that it would be found on his body if he passed away. After that,he sat for 2 hours on the rock, thinking for another way out. But he was left with no choice. It was either to jump down or freeze to death.

Mustering up his courage,he edged slowly over the rock. He had never been more terrified in his life but he knew that he had to do it.It was like base jumping without a parachute,he had no idea what was at the bottom and there was no way back again.Soon,he felt himself falling,he held his breath and squeezed his eyes shut.He waited to feel the impact,to know what was going to happen after that.

When he hit the ground,he tested each of his limbs and was shocked to know that everything worked. It was the thick snow which had cushioned his fall.He slided downwards and got hold of a rope.He prayed that he could see his family againbefore he let go of the rope.He landed hard and was injured but he was still alive. He went further downwards and he attempted to attract attention by shouting and waving, but to no avail. He was lonely and tired,he stopped caring and felt like giving up.Later, when his senses jolted him up,he told himself that he could not give up.He fidgeted with his phone and was relieved to know that there was finally a signal, a network connection on his phone. He called his companion and at first his companion thought that he was playing games and did not take him seriously. But when his companion realised that Tom was sobbing,he told Tom to switch off his phone to save batteries, contacted the police and rescue services.Tom phoned his companion when he saw the car that his companion and the police were on.Long after midnight,a rescue helicopter landed near Tom's phone light. He was rescued. When he saw his father again, his father demanded to know why he jumped off the mountain, and while they were embraced in each other's arms,Tom knew why he had done it.

I feel that Tom was quite careless and too impulsive. He should have considered the dangers that there would be if he went off-piste. Accidents could happen anywhere and we should always be careful in what we do to prevent tragedies from happening. It is not worth to sacrifice your life for the sake of more fun and thrill, and it would be too late for regrets after that. For Tom,he was lucky. He could have died but he tried to persevere and find means to return and get help.Although he succeeded, but it would not be as lucky as he is if someone else does something similar. At the right times,we should try to resist temptations. Acting rashly would cause harm and regret. We should always think of the consequences before we act as there are many things that cannot be undone.

In our lives, there are many decisions for us to make, and some could change our lives forever. For example,Tom had chosen to jump down the mountain and he was saved. If he had chosen to stay at the spot and not do anything,he would have frozen to death. We may not know what is the right decision to make sometimes, but our family and friends are always available to offer advice and help us. If we are all alone,we will have to think for ourselves and try to make the right decision. As long as we have tried,it does not matter if it is right or wrong. If it's a wrong decision that we have made,we can learn from our mistakes and move on,avoid committing the same mistakes in the future.

Besides that, perseverance is an important value in our lives. In everything that we do,we should always give our best shot at it and complete the task. Obstacles are inevitable and we do not give up easily just because of that. It is hard to succeed without perseverance,we have to believe that efforts that we have put in and the time we have spent waiting will not go to waste. Failures lead to success.Without failures,we would not learn or cherish.

Finally, our family are the closest kin to us and we should not make them worried. Blood is thicker than water, no matter what happens, our family is still the most important to us. There is a bond between our family and us, a special and strong one. Perhaps it was that, which gave Tom the courage to pesevere and jump down.
Therefore i feel that there are alot of things that are unpredictable, and we can only try our best to tackle it when faced with such situations. When we believe, there will be hope.
